Funded at the end of 1994, the Interdepartmental Center for Science and Technology for the Conservation of the Historical-Architectural Heritage, subsequently transformed into a Research Center with the name CISTeC, started its activities in the dual role of Research Center on cultural heritage and Service Center for public bodies, in particular Superintendencies.
The Center aims to promote scientific and technical research for the knowledge, conservation and enhancement of the historical-architectural heritage, with particular reference to materials, structures and the environment.
Over the years particular experience was gathered in the following sectors:
- Investigation methods on ancient wall structures
- Assessment of the state of conservation and consequent restoration and structural consolidation interventions
- Study methods on the functionality of materials and structures and on the seismic vulnerability of monumental assets and historic buildings
- Interaction of wall structures and urban settlements with the terrain; consolidation interventions on natural slopes and foundation structures
- Analysis of degradation mechanisms and study of protective systems and materials
- Studies of the compatibility of hydraulic binders with ancient materials
- Techniques for the study and control of surfaces and the microclimate in confined environments, including underground ones; development of CFD and other models
- Collection and arrangement of documentation relating to restoration and conservation interventions; creation of databases
- Methodologies for surveying historic centers and architectural structures
- Non-destructive analysis and digital "imaging" methodologies for the diagnostics of works of art
- Study of water disposal and waterproofing systems for archaeological sites
